Chapter History 2006

A big hug and thank you once more to owner Jackie Ragsdale for letting us use Willie’s Lounge in Dallas as our official hangout and rally center for W&FMC Chapter #8. And here’s to bartender Paula Watson, who is always there with a smile. And Willie’s always makes our Burn Camp Run start with a bang!

This year we lost a few members but we were proud to see them set-up their own chapter in Corsicana, TX. Congratulations to Los Bomberos Chapter #179 new members and their associates: Mike & Susan Dorety, Pete & Jan Ivie, Johnny & Diane Quarles, Darrell & Marti Stevenson, Ken & Sandi Dunnigan and Paul Jacobs. We hope to have lots of rides and rallies together, and maybe a few beers along the way.

Chapter #8 now has 32 members, 5 associates and several new prospects. Our newest members are Jim & Judy Pharr and proby Mike Multop.

In February, a pretty good bunch of us got to go on the 2nd Annual Los Bomberos Cruise to Key West, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Wind & Fire met at the Hog’s Breath in Key West for a toast all those who couldn’t make it, and we all raised a glass. From Dallas Chapter #8: Mike & Susan Dorety, Gary & Mindy Lovell, Gary & Jennifer Freeman, prospect Jim & Judy Pharr and Dallas Firemen Jeff & Karen Walker; from Corsicana: Pete & Jan Ivie, Johnny & Diane Quarles, Darrell & Marti Stevenson, and from Houston: Roger & LaVeeda Parrish. 14 Wind & Fire members/associates and 46 firemen, retired firemen, wives and friends made the cruise. We had a fun but windy day in Grand Cayman and barely made it to the Harley shop on the pier before the ship had final boarding. Luckily the ship had plenty of beer and margaritas in stock.

Pete Ivie arranged a nice reception in the Viking Crown at the very top of the ship, and we mugged for the camera and caught up on the latest stories. We also got some great shots (pictures, too!) at Senor Frog’s in Cozumel, balloon hats, sombreros, et al. The food on board the Rhapsody was great and the company was better. Hope everyone else had as much fun as Table 31... Oorah, Fifties Night! Jim (Bebo) & Judy Parr and Jeff & Karen Walker helped make the Schooner Bar Kamikaze Karaoke the best place to be to watch Rowdy Yates sing and Felix the waiter play stump the drunk. It was a nice ride if you can’t be riding a Harley.

March 6th found Gary Lovell, Jerry Rushing and Reid Russell riding over 1100 miles to Ocala, Florida. The Wind & Fire Eastern Rally was held in New Smyrna Beach on the 8th, but Ocala was as close at they could find a room.

In April, several members made the Hill Country ride in Kerrville : Gary & Jennifer Freeman , Bo Culp, Claude & Cindy Bullard, Hoyt Hubbell, Gary & Mindy Lovell and Jim & Judy Pharr. We met the Corsicana bunch for a great ride in the beautiful spring weather. Some of the best stops included the Crawfish festival in Llano, The Blues Café in Bandera and the watering hole of Albert Icehouse, down Hie Albert Road. Everyone needs to visit Albert (Pop. 4) sometime, to relax under the massive oaks with a really cold beer, after a hot, dusty ride. We also had a great ride along the Perdernales down Hwy 10 to Johnson City. The ride from Blanco to Luckenbach is another purdy ride!

The Lovell’s and the Pharr’s made our way back home Sunday up Hwy 281 and stopped by the John Marc Camp, between Monroe and Meridian, which is the site of the Parkland Burn Camp, I-Thonka-Chi. We looked thru the fence and imagined all the kids and counselors we were planning to send there for a week of fun and normalcy, when they need it most. We stopped in Blum for a cold drink at Little Boot Scootin Country, and were invited back by Robbi, when we make the ride to Burn Camp in June.

May 13th…What a wonderful day we had for our 4th Burn Camp Run. $25,000 was collected for our kids to attend….

The 4th Annual WFMC Southern Rally was held June 3rd at Hanover’s in Pflugerville, Texas. Over a hundred members, associates and friends celebrated Texas style….

The Fourth of July weekend saw six Chapter 8 members hauling butt to Holister, California for the WFMC Western Rally. Gary Lovell, Jim Pharr, Jerry Rushing, Reid Russell, Bo Culp and Hoyt Hubell braved blazing heat and icy snow…..

WFMC National Rally in Hill City, SD was held on August 8th and five members made that little trip!! Reid Russell, Jim & Judy Pharr and Gary & Mindy Lovell traveled along with some good friends and family for a very adventurous summer ride….

All four of these runs are detailed on the attached pages.

The Ride to Remember is held every year in Colorado Springs and every year some of us go. This year Bo & Linda Culp, Claude & Cindi Bullard, Gary Lovell, Hoyt Hubell, Jimmy Phillips, David Smith, Pat Murphy, Reid Russell, Robert Russ, Ken Sutcliffe and Paul Walukas and a bunch of fireman friends made the trip to honor fallen firefighters. The ride organized by the Rocky Mountain Chapter included a Thursday ride to Trail Ridge in Estes Park and a Friday ride to Mt. Evans, both spectacular.

Saturday was the big ride down from Denver to Colorado Springs and once again the overpasses and streets were full of flags, fire apparatus and motorcycles. Everyone stopped to wave at the sight and sounds as thousands of firefighters thundered into The Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park.

Chapter 8 was well represented at the Ellis County Toy Run and the Firefighters Jam in
December. Lots of toys were collected in some really cold weather!

We ended our year with a wonderful Christmas party held in Ferris Texas, hosted by Jim & Judy Pharr at their great party “shop”. The bunch of us filled up with fajitas and all the trimmings and then enjoyed a wild game of “dirty” santa. Several beers and shots made the evening fly by and we were sorry to say goodnight and good-bye to really good year!

Even though we don’t have the most members of any Wind and Fire Chapter, for the third straight year we managed to send representatives to the Eastern, Southern, Western and National Rallies and the Ride to Remember! This was another great year for our Dallas Firefighters Chapter #8.
